Guildeline for Defence of Research Proposal

(Actions to be taken by Student)


1. BEFORE PROPOSAL DEFENCE:

i. Prepare six (6) copies of research proposal and send to Faculty Head of Postgraduate Studies.
ii. Research proposal must be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin software. The similarity index must be less than 30%. The proposal must be attached with the Attendance Confirmation Form and the Turnitin Originality Report with both endorsed by the Main Supervisor. You are also required to attached a copy of the IGS Research Skills Certificate or the exemption letter.
iii. Research proposal and all required documents must be submitted to the Faculty two (2) weeks before the DRP.
iv. Attached is the Research Proposal format for your attention.


2. ON PROPOSAL DEFENCE DAY:

i. Students are given 30-40 (PhD) and 15-20 (MSc) minutes to present and answer questions from Panel of Assessors.
ii. Please make five (5) copies of PowerPoint handouts (refer attachment) for Panel of Assessors during the defence session.
iii. The PowerPoint presentation will be a brief summary of the complete Research Proposal sent earlier to the Faculty.
iv. Please bring the original copy of the IGS Research Skills Certificate or the exemption letter on the DRP registration day. Students without the certificate or letter will not be allowed to defend their proposal.
v. Complete student information on the DRP Assessment Form (four (4) copies) to be submitted to the DRP secretariat.

Contents of Research Proposal

Research proposal is a written statement of the research design that includes a statement explaining the objective of the study and a detailed, systematic outline of a particular research methodology. Normally, the research proposal for a Master/PhD degree includes the following key elements:


~ Full title of the research
~ Background of the problem/study
~ Problem statement/Problem identification
~ Research objectives/Research questions
~ Scope and limitation of the study
~ Significance of the study
~ Literature review
~ Conceptual framework (if applicable)
~ Hypotheses (if applicable)
~ Research methodology/ research design/ sampling/ data collection/ plan for data analysis
~ Study plan/Gantt chart
~ List of references


Notes for students:

i. The suitable length of research proposal is different from one field to another. Please refer to your supervisor.
ii. Please do not include the whole chapter of your literature review in the research proposal. Present only the summary of the review.
